Lisa Simpson is to cry aloud for Cornwall’s independence from Britain in a special Christmas episode of The Simpsons, according to campaigners. The plot has been revealed by a group that says it has been asked to give the character lessons in the Cornish language. Cornwall is Britain’s southernmost county and had a population of 499,000 people in 2001. Matthew Clarke, of the Cornish Language Fellowship, said he was contacted last week by the producers of the US cartoon series who wanted a translation of the phrase “Freedom for Cornwall now”. “They wanted Lisa to take up the call for Cornish independence,” he said. “It is probably one of the better inquiries we have had.” The segment has now been recorded by Yeardley Smith, the voice behind Lisa, and the show is set to go out in Britain as an alternative to the Queen’s traditional Christmas message. Yeardley Smith, the actress known for her voice work as Lisa on “The Simpsons,” will star in her solo show Yeardley Smith: More at the Union Square Theatre Off Broadway, starting March 1. The solo play written by Smith will officially open March 22 at the downtown Manhattan venue. Judith Ivey – the actress recently seen in Women on Fire — directs. More follows the autobiographical story of an actress who has had her ups and down in show business. On her quest for fame, the star tells all – from her regrets of having played the slutty girl in “Ginger Ale Afternoon” to her Broadway debut in Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing. Yeardley Smith, voice of Lisa Simpson, turns 39 today. Happy birthday! Speaking of which, she will be among the many artists who will take part in the third annual “Women Center Stage” festival at The Culture Project’s 45 Bleecker space. Playbill has posted details of the event, running through July 13. Yeardley’s performance follows “A woman’s darkly comic journey through her life in and out of show-biz.”
