Live Action Simpsons Goes Viral
A video that recreates the introduction to “The Simpsons” with live actors is spreading across the Internet faster than Homer can say “D’oh” — part of a viral marketing campaign by BSkyB. Painstakingly crafted by Sky and its ad agency Devilfish, the video was originally intended as an on-air promotion for the Sky One network.
The company decided to release it on the Internet as part of a word-of-mouth brand building exercise, tapping into the red-hot Web video sector. “If we had only showed it on air, you might turn to someone and say that was really cool,” said BSkyB communications director Matthew Anderson. “Putting it online, there’s a fantastic discussion between millions of people — it’s bringing the Simpsons to them instead of having them tune in.”
After less than a week, the video has been viewed millions of times at online video sites like YouTube. The move to create word-of-mouth “viral” content follows similar guerrilla marketing efforts from major advertisers such as Nike and Microsoft, and comes amid a concerted push by traditional media companies to expand their online businesses.

The clip re-enacts the title sequence to a tee beginning with the camera zooming into a schoolroom to see a blonde Bart scribbling lines on the blackboard.
Matt Groening has approved the human version of the show’s opening credits to promote the brand new series which Sky One will continue broadcasting on March 20th. “We used regular actors, not so much for their resemblance – as you can’t copy a bunch of yellow characters – but becuase you can easily identify with them.”

Marge Delivers Her Message
The UK got an alternative televised Christmas message this year. In addition to the Queen’s traditional address to the nation, Channel 4 aired an exclusive animated piece for English viewers. In it, Marge Simpson spoke to viewers wishing them a Merry Christmas, using various British cliche’s. All the family members dropped in at some point during the speech, including Homer dressed as ‘Father Christmas’ and Lisa with her much publicised ‘Free Cornwall’ protest. If you don’t live in the UK you wouldn’t have been able to see this message on television, but it can be downloaded in its entirety by clicking here (10mb wmv file).

Homer In Mastercard Commercial
Homer Simpson is going to the Super Bowl on Sunday. He will headline a 30-second MasterCard ad – one of several funky spots airing during Sunday’s Big Game. The Homer spot, part of MasterCard’s ongoing “Priceless” campaign, is titled “The Simpsons” and highlights a typical day for Homer, who runs some errands so he’ll be able to spend more time with Marge and the kids. Homer’s first stop is the Kwik-E-Mart, where he grabs a six-pack of Duff, a hot dog, potato chips and some doughnuts as the voiceover intones “Diapers, milk and laundry detergent … $25”. And so it goes, with Homer getting his oil changed, visiting his barber and ending up at Moe’s Tavern – where he’s served a beer and toasts the voiceover. “Getting your errands done quicker to spend more time with your family … Priceless,” says the voiceover, before repeating itself more sternly a second time. “Yeah, yeah, I heard you the first time,” Homer replies. “Stupid voiceover.” Read More >>>
