Homer Simpson hit the big screen on Friday in a short teaser trailer announcing The Simpsons movie. The Simpsons teaser debuted prior to the opening of 20th Century Fox’s latest animated film “Ice Age: The Meltdown.” The clip announces Fox’s July 27, 2007 release date for The Simpsons movie.

The animated 25-second clip opens on a giant superhero S. “Leaping his way onto the silver screen,” intones a narrator, “the greatest hero in American history!” Cut to Homer Simpson sitting on his couch in his tighty whities. “I forgot what I was supposed to say,” he says. The narrator continues, ” ‘The Simpsons Movie,’ coming to the screen, July 27, 2007.” “Uh, uh,” says Homer, “we better get started.”

The Simpsons clip discretely went out to theaters as part of a combo-trailer that includes Fox’s “Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties.” The same clip is expected to air during “The Simpsons” television show Sunday night. Despite today’s ‘foolish’ date, this news has been confirmed by the hundreds of people who have already seen Ice Age 2.

Harry Shearer has confirmed active work on the first Simpsons feature movie. Shearer broke the news during an appearance on the Mancow radio show, and a listener sent in a report to the AICN website: “Harry Shearer … mentioned the two year contract extension [for the TV series] and then was asked … if this [would] delay the movie project by two years. His response was that it would not delay it, because they were recording dialogue for it right now.” Shearer stated that the language of the movie is going a little more edgy than what is run on TV, but not enough to receive a “restricted” rating.

Shearer’s comments show just how quickly progress is being made on the Simpsons movie. When IGN reported on it last September, not even a script had been completed yet.

Composer Hans Zimmer is expected to write the score for the feature film version of The Simpsons. As a long-time composer for James Brooks – who produces the hit television show – Zimmer is an unlikely choice, as most people were expecting television series composer Alf Clausen (or even Danny Elfman, who wrote the main theme nearly 19 years ago) to be frontrunners. Work on the animated film is expected to begin later this summer.

An Online Petition has been set up by fans to get Danny Elfman on board so if it is of great interest to you, you might want to consider signing it.

The Movie Blog points to these new details on the upcoming Simpsons feature. Producer David Mirkin maintains that quality is of utmost importance; to that end, they’ve decided not to rush production. “It’s all about the quality — the writing — which we’re working on now,” he says. “We are very quality conscious, and we don’t want the series to suffer because of the movie.” Meanwhile, though the animation processes used will have to be altered slightly for the big screen, no one involved wants the film to look markedly different from the series. “We’re looking at various tests to get the right look,” Mirkin continues. “We’re taking it into the realm of cinema but not too far from how it looks on the show.” Still no details on plot, but it looks like many past and present Simpsons writers will be on board.

Opinion (Lauren MacLaren): This month, the cast and crew of The Simpsons confirmed rumours of a movie deal after years of speculation that such a film was already in the works. After what seemed like eons to diehard fans, the inevitable has happened, and The Simpsons will take Hollywood. In other words, the show’s producers have given the final push to a show that has been teetering on the edge of mediocrity for over five seasons. Despite anyone’s opinions on the show’s current quality, the fact of the matter is The Simpsons ceased to exist as a mere “television show” years ago. After hundreds of books and articles, several certified university courses and a legion of fans all analyzing the show’s social significance, The Simpsons is less a cartoon and more a cultural phenomenon. Many believe the movie will mark the end of the series, and though the show isn’t now what it once was, I can’t think of a less fitting send off.

James L. Brooks doesn’t make movies too often, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t keeping busy. While Brooks’ involvement in The Simpsons isn’t as extensive as it once was, particularly while he’s in the midst of directing a feature, Brooks still says that the show is close to his heart. “Well, I sure haven’t been [as involved] for the last year. Usually what I do when I’m not doing the movie is there’s one day a week that I put in…” The talk of a Simpsons movie has been circulating almost since the day the show first hit, but there has always been a hesitation. When IGN FilmForce spoke with Brooks this weekend, he indicated that the prospect of a movie was not out of the question. “If we feel right, then we’ll go forward, and we’re in the process of trying to feel right. The 16th season of hit animated Fox comedy The Simpsons began on Sunday and Entertainment Weekly talked to executive producer Al Jean who revealed secrets about upcoming episodes while also giving an update on the possible movie. Jean says the show’s writers are working on the long-promised feature film, with a targeted 2008 release date. They’ve even laid down some possible plotlines, but won’t spoil anything this early. “There are a couple things on the show that I steered away from what might be in the movie,” Jean says. “The biggest thing is you don’t want to do a movie that’s not reflective of the quality of the show, and you don’t want the quality of the show to slip because you’re doing the movie. The upcoming Simpsons movie will either “kill the show or completely reinvigorate it,” series creator Matt Groening says. While still in the earliest stages of production, a “Simpsons” movie is definitely on the way. “Everyone on the show this year seems really re-energized, and we’re starting to throw out ideas for the movie and I think that will either kill the show or completely re-invigorate it,” Groening says. “We’re trying to tell a story that we wouldn’t do on television and take advantage of a longer process and a more ambitious process for animation,” he says. Groening also speaks more of the show’s fate. “It’s not a machine, It’s a bunch of humans working really hard. It doesn’t get any easier because we’re still faced with the problem of having a history. We’re trying not to repeat ourselves and we’re also competing with people’s memories of their favorite episode.”

Work has now started on a Simpsons feature film, but fans of the cartoon creations will have to wait years before it hits the big screen. Yeardley Smith, voice to Lisa Simpson, said writing was already under way, but recording would not start until after the present TV series was completed. And even then it would be three years before the film reached cinemas because the animation process took so long. “Animation takes forever,” she said. “My wish for the show is that we go out with a bang not a pimple. “If we can do a movie and it can be as good as our best episodes, I’m thrilled. I think that would be wonderful.” Her only fear was that fans of the cartoon classic may have grown bored of the show, which is now in its 15th season. DVD Fanatic got a chance to talk to The Simpsons producer and writer Mike Reiss, who chatted about the next “Simpsons” DVD and says that The Simpsons movie is definitely in the works. “It’s been 13 years of wanting to do “The Simpsons” Movie. Finally FOX said, “Let’s just do it!” We never had the greatest idea that was compelling but FOX said, “Maybe if we start paying you, you’ll get inspired.” And sure enough it worked! We’ve got a very good and interesting idea and it’s different from the show. You know, it’s like the “South Park” movie where it’s just a bigger, longer, amplified version of the show. I can’t tell you anything specific about it. My wife doesn’t even know the secret.” When asked when he thought this movie would come out, Reiss said “I will say two years from this summer.
