The Simpsons has once again notched up a nomination at this years Emmy Awards. On the complete list of nominees announced yesterday, The Simpsons makes an appearance in the Animated Programming (less than one hour) category. The episode ‘The Seemingly Never Ending Story’ takes this years nomination. The Simpsons is up against some tough competition, in Family Guys “PTV”, South Park’s controversial “Trapped In The Closet”, and two Cartoon Network programs rounding out the list.

Last year The Simpsons “Future-Drama” was beaten by South Park’s “Best Friends Forever” in the same category. This year may be a tough ride for South Park, with the nominated episode questioning Tom Cruise’s sexuality and mocking his Scientology beliefs. It is believed to have been the reason behind Isaac Hayes’ shock exit from the show. The episode hasn’t been repeated since the initial furore and a planned re-airing in March (06) was scrapped. Award winners will be announced at the creative-arts Emmy’s ceremony on August 19.

The Simpsons has been voted the top cartoon by mums and dads. Homer’s terrible parenting skills and slapstick comedy makes it a big hit with kids too. But research for CBBC shows it wins with adults because of the hidden meanings. Homer was also their favourite cartoon character of all time. Box office hit Shrek polled second with its mix of simple gags and subtle humour. Third was Wacky Races. The most popular cartoon scene was Bugs Bunny’s spoof of Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries.

The Simpsons has taken another Writers Guild Award in last night’s ceremony, which saw the show nominated for six different episodes under the animation category. While the show was always going to receive an award, Michael Price was the lucky recipient for his episode Mommie Beerest. This episode won over The Father, Son & Holy Guest Star, The Girl Who Slept Too Little, See Homer Run, Thank God It’s Doomsday, and There’s Something About Marrying. This is The Simpsons’ third WGA since the category was introduced three years ago, so it seems they have it in the bag for years to come.

In a situation never before seen, The Simpsons has already scored itself a Writers Guild of America (WGA) award this year, taking out all six nominations in the animation category. The nominees are as follows.

The full sweep of the nominations is a reward in itself, the show already trouncing shows such as South Park, Family Guy, American Dad and King Of The Hill. The awards will be presented Feb. 4 at ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York.

The Simpsons has once again walked away from the Emmy’s empty handed. South Park’s episode “Best Friends Forever” defeated The Simpsons’ “Future-Drama” for Outstanding Animated Program. In the other categories, “Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical” won best song (Over “A Star is Torn”‘s “Always My Dad” and Lost won for best Musical composition (Dramatic score). This is the second year in a row that The Simpsons has not won an Emmy for Outstanding Animated Series. These Creative Arts award winners were announced earlier this week, while the Prime Time Emmy’s will be announced and broadcast on television this Sunday. Thanks Nathan for the heads up.

The Simpsons has again been nominated for three emmy awards this year for three different episodes over a number of categories. For Animated Program (less than one hour) the episode Future Drama is up against Family Guy’s North By North Quahog, South Park’s Best Friends Forever, Samurai Jack, and Spongebob Squarepants. The other two nominations come thanks to composer Alf Clausen. For Music Composition (Dramatic Underscore) a piece from Treehouse Of Horror XV was picked, while for Music and Lyrics, he and writer Carolyn Omine pick up a nomination for the song ‘Always My Dad’ which won Lisa the Krusty’s Lil’ Starmaker contest in A Star Is Torn. These Emmy awards will be presented at the Creative Arts ceremony on September 11, which also acts as the season premiere for The Simpsons. Other Emmy’s are presented an broadcast a week later on September 18. We’ll let you know how they fare.

At the 77th Academy Awards ceremony in Hollywood, Brad Bird’s “The Incredibles” was named best animated feature film, defeating box office champion “Shrek 2.”

Bird, an executive consultant with The Simpsons for many years, directed the “Do the Bartman” video, “Krusty Gets Busted,” and co-directed “Like Father, Like Clown” with Jeffrey Lynch. “Animation is about creating the illusion of life and you can’t create it if you don’t have one,” he said, before thanking his mother, wife and children for being part of his life.

The Simpsons has eclipsed classics like Tom and Jerry to be named the greatest cartoon. Matt Groening’s creation has topped a poll of 100 best cartoons voted for by TV viewers. Homer, Marge, Bart, and Lisa beat Hanna Barbera’s Tom and Jerry to second place, and the more recent South Park to third. It has been voted more impressive than Hollywood blockbusters Toy Story (4th), and Shrek. Bugs Bunny has made it to tenth place but other classics like Popeye (23), Danger Mouse (24) and Pinnochio (25) have been relegated by modern wonders like The Incredibles (9th) and Finding Nemo (14). We neglected to mention that two awards rather than one were won by The Simpsons at the Writers Guild presentation on the weekend. “Fraudcast News,” another episode of “The Simpsons,” earned the guild’s Paul Selvin Award honoring works that focus on First Amendment issues. The episode by Don Payne had the ever-crusading Lisa Simpson using the school newspaper to fight the politically charged agenda of a media empire run by Springfield’s ruthless billionaire, Montgomery Burns. “I’d like to thank Rupert Murdoch for not having me killed,” Don Payne said, pointing to the irony of the episode’s subject matter and “The Simpsons’ corporate parentage. This award was won in addition to Ian Maxtone Graham’s award for “Catch ‘Em If You Can.”

The Simpsons came home from the 57th Annual Writers Guild Awards yesterday with an award under their belt. Ian Maxtone-Graham accepted the award for his Season 15 episode “Catch ‘Em If You Can”. This is the show’s second WGA since the animation category was introduced at last year’s ceremony. Previously, Matt Selman won for the episode “The Dad Who Knew Too Little.” Three other Simpsons episodes were up for the award this year, with Joel H. Cohen’s “Today, I Am A Clown,” Don Payne’s “Fraudcast News,” and Julie & David Chambers’ “Milhouse Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” missing out. The only other nomination in this category was for an episode of Cartoon Network’s Justice League. Congratulations, Ian.
