With just one week remaining in Season 23, last night’s episode ‘Ned ‘N Edna’s Blend’ attracted just 4.00 million viewers – the lowest recorded viewers for a new episode on record.
“When Ned suffers an accident at a play, he reveals that he and Edna are married. At the hospital, half the town intrudes on Ned’s room, and Edna tells everyone to clear out. They soon realize that having an open marriage is tricky, and they have to deal with the ups and downs. Meanwhile, Edna pulls Rod and Todd out of Christian school and into Springfield Elementary.”
The new record bumps season 22’s ‘The Great Simpsina’ out of the 5 least-watched episodes of all time, which means this list is now entirely comprised of episodes from this season.
- “Ned ‘N Edna’s Blend” (season 23) – 4.00 million
- “The Daughter Also Rises” (season 23) – 4.33 million
- “The Spy Who Learned Me” (season 23) – 4.74 million
- “Beware My Cheating Bart” (season 23) – 4.86 million
- “How I Wet Your Mother” (season 23) – 4.96 million
Next week’s season finale ‘Lisa Goes Gaga’ has the opportunity to break this downward trend, though for every extra Lady Gaga fan that tunes in will be a hater that switches off.
Fox was fourth overall for the night and third among adults 18 – 49. The Cleveland Show at 7.30 had 2.79 million viewers, Bob’s Burgers had 3.63 million at 8.30, followed by Family Guy with 4.94 million and the season finale of American Dad at 4.12 million viewers, beating The Simpsons for the second week running.

Lowest watched episode ever!
What a shame. When this show ends the series finale will be barely 5 million.
Let’s see if Gaga episode scores even lower!
It was the best episode of the season, It was at least in the top 3 of a very good season so far. I think the poor ratings are due to bad marketing….
have you heard of a show called game of throwns, you know that show that “everyone’s watching” and is winning all these awards? it only had 3.6 million viewers on sunday. that’s 400,000 less viewers then the least watched simpsons and it’s a huge show witha a large budget. troy mcclere said it best when he said the simpsons will countinue to run until it becomes unprofitable.
It’s also on a channel called HBO. Not everyone gets that. FOX is a basic channel that almost everyone has access to. The fact that those numbers are close are telling. The Simpsons is dry and stale. It’s almost over.
Yeah, and the Wire got like .5 on ratings all the time, won more awards, and was on HBO 5 seasons. It’s now regarded as the best show, ever.
That’s the beauty of pay television and HBO. HBO respects art, not rating. They almost always let shows continue until they’re actually finished.
…The Simpsons is a channel you don’t need to subscribe to. You don’t even need a satellite or cable box, you MIGHT need “rabbit ears” to tune into it but that’s it. So ,technically, just about EVERYONE IN THE WORLD on a SUNDAY NIGHT (the night when the most amount of people statistically aren’t working/busy) has access to the show. So yes those are low ratings.
3.6 for Game of Thrones? THat’s HUGE!
Don’t blame marketing, blame poor writing. (Amongst other things) >_>
Or the obvious reason. They have been on 3 years too long!
I don’t think the Simpsons have been around too long. I wish they could go longer than season 25. I can grantee that the show’s last episode, will bring more people than ever. Of course ratings can’t be trusted any more. I don’t even watch them on cable.
If the Simpsons are almost Over is because The Simpsons cast have been hating on Fox for a long time, and Fox is tired of them. I am sure Matt would love to bring them to Comedy Central once they are done there.
The show has to end at some point though. It certainly doesn’t seem possible given the steady decline in ratings and the pay cuts the crew recently took that its going to go on much longer. I’m just hoping that if they don’t make next season the big finale season that Fox will bring them back for a true final season that does the show justice.
Right on brother tell it like it is. to elaborate on ratings, they mean jack. basically only like thousands of people in America participate in the Nielsen ratings study the other millions of viewers are guesstimated. most Hard data is from DVD – BLU-RAY Sales, Internet streaming sites, and sites where you download TV.
So you’re basically saying that any type of poll ever taken is useless because they didn’t survey every single person in the country.
Thats good that the ratings don’t mean jack to you but I assume you’re not a TV executive. The networks certainly do care about the ratings as well as advertisers. They cancel shows all the time based solely on those numbers and the rates advertisers will pay for a commercial are judged by those ratings.
So with that in mind why do you feel that the show will continue on when the ratings are steadily declining and are now at record lows. Not to mention the show is over 2 decades old, not all that relevant anymore and costs a fortune to produce.
I love the Simpsons and I’m happy if it continues on it just looks like we’re finally closing in on the end.
I think you meant IMO, I still enjoy the show and I think it is as good as most of the other seasons of the show. FUTURAMA AND THE SIMPSONS ARE STILL THE BEST SHOWS ON TV…..
Guy Incognito, YES that is what I am saying and I will also say IMHO just so you all understand I am not stating what I say as fact. I have watched enough TV and studied data to no what is going on. A lot of what is going on is network politics it has nothing to do with ratings. otherwise how does a show like Futurama get canceled when it gets pre empted every week by football games. the fox execs did not like that groening had full control over the show, so they canceled it before it could become big like the simpsons. and yes I believe most polls are inaccurate case in point the night of the 2008 presidential election polls showed mccain and palin winning by a landslide, the exact opposite was the case and anyone who argues different on that point I have a Washington post from the morning after the election that proves I am right OBAMA won on a landslide. what does that say about polls?….
