Simpsons Executive Producer Al Jean has spoken out to Entertainment Weekly on the recent Simpsons renewal.
“Our mood is elation, mixed with a sense of ‘Man, we’ve got a lot of work to do.’ Believe me, we don’t look at this as these will definitely be the last two seasons. We just want to keep fighting and go as long as we can…. We really feel this isn’t an end but a beginning. It’s a cliché, but it’s the truth.”
When asked how many more seasons of The Simpsons he would like to see, Jean added, “I honestly think that 30 is a goal to shoot for. I want to put The Simpsons at 30 seasons before the end of the decade. Forty sounds insane, but 25 sounded insane 20 years ago. Having seen how far it’s gone, it’s not for me to cap it…. And Gunsmoke did 635 episodes, so that’s something to shoot for, too.”
He added that the producers are putting together a special promo to thank fans for their support. “The viewers are obviously the reason this has happened.”

I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a chalkboard gag making fun of last week’s events too.
I’m glad someone finally mentioned Gunsmoke! I was beginning to think that I was the only one counting down to the 636th episode, which I’ve been doing since about episode 300. At a rate of 22 episodes per season, they would take the crown in the 29th!
Yeah, I’ve heard the argument made by someone in the industry that FOX should keep the show going just so they can have The Simpsons have the record for the most episodes of any primetime series. Granted that those shows continue to be enjoyable and of decent quality.
Ratings don’t really matter at this point… especially since The Simpsons often does better than Family Guy. It’s about money.
Television is different than it was 20 years ago and people who try to compare the show to what it was 20 years ago can’t seem to grasp that it’s not a fair comparison. Reality TV has taken over. Fox has been in 4th place on Sunday nights for a while now, but they do often grab the younger audience. The Simpson’s viewership has changed from 20 year olds to the average viewer being something like 32. None of the major networks get the ratings today that they had in the early 90’s. And since The Simpsons is in uncharted waters having been on the air this long it’s no wonder that their ratings change too. With Netflix, Hulu, and the internet it’s very easy to watch shows online and stream them to your TV if you can’t catch them when they air.
The fans themselves change too. For many of us, our sense of humor changes over 20+ years. What we enjoyed as a teen may not be the same as what we enjoy as an adult and you can’t constantly blame television or programming for that.
Great news about keeping the Simpsons show alive for a few more years, I say keep them coming and please make a 2nd movie as well?
Thank you.
Great news. Even though people say the show is not as good anymore, imo it is stil a lot better than most of the junk on tv. I still look forward to new episodes and even though they’re not as good as the 90s (the simpsons in the 90 is the best tv ever IMO) to me the new episodes are still good.
I’d definitely LOVE having 30 seasons of the Simpsons. I just can’t imagine having no new Simpsons.
Also I want a second movie too. Would be great. Is there any news on if they’re planning another one?
I agree with you
almost all the series now sucks !
in my Opinion the simpsons still funny
and I think it always will be until it ends
unlike family guy they sucked so fast
Yes – The actors are signed on for 2 more movies.
That doesn’t mean they are in production of one or even have a script… it just means should the time come they have the actors.
Yeardley Smith was on Countdown with Keith Olbermann when The Simpsons Movie came out and he asked her if there would be more movies and her reply was yes, that the cast had been signed on for 2 more films.
That would be great to have 2 more movies. Id hope they’d do it after the series ended.
Let’s hope season 23 gives us some good episodes
This is great news. I hope they make it to 30+ seasons and 636+ episodes.
