A total of 8.01 million viewers tuned in to watch this year’s Treehouse of Horror episode. These figures are only slightly down on last year’s installment (8.20 million) and consistent with the last couple of years. Gone are the days where the Treehouse episode delivers a higher-than-average performance — these figures were slightly weaker than the Season premiere. That said, The Simpsons was still the highest rated show in the animation block for the night, so this is a reflection on smaller audiences in general rather than a decline in the show’s popularity.
New show ‘Allen Gregory’ started weak, losing almost half of the Simpsons lead in and receiving 4.73 million viewers in total. This seemed to have a flow-on effect, as an all new Family Guy followed with 5.96 million viewers. The Cleveland Show ended the night in its new timeslot with a paltry 4.63 million. Fox was fourth overall for the night and third among adults 18 – 49.

The Simpsons rule the world. Seriously
It’s hard to make much of ratings anymore. Especially for a show like the Simpsons – they don’t matter nearly as much as a show that’s just starting out (if they matter at all at this point).
Television is different now from what it was in the 90’s. No show and no network is getting the ratings it had back in the early 90’s today in the 2010’s. Reality TV is king and there are more channels and more options for watching television now through netflix, the internet, recording episodes, etc. There’s a different television landscape and ratings are increasingly becoming irrelevant. I remember when shows like Seinfeld were getting tens of millions of viewers a night. It’s just not happening on any network anymore. Including Fox.
Good ratings are better than Bad ratings… but as you point out The Simpsons once again beat all the other FOX animated shows for the night, including family guy. WooHoo!
